Some of the best views in Scotland aren’t the ones you plan your whole day around. They’re the ones you nearly drive past, then change your mind at the last second and pull over — and end up being really glad you did.
The viewpoint at Rest and Be Thankful, just above the village of Arrochar, is exactly that kind of stop.
An easy pause with a big view
The Rest and Be Thankful sits on the A83 as the road climbs west out of Arrochar, marking the high point between Loch Long and Loch Fyne, with Loch Lomond just a short distance away.
From the car park, the view opens out across Glen Croe. Green hills roll away on either side, the road winds through the valley below, and everything suddenly feels calm and spacious. It’s one of those places where you naturally stop talking for a minute and just look.
There’s a bench, space to stand safely, and no need to walk anywhere to appreciate it. The view is right there.
Ideal when you’re Loch-hopping
If you’re travelling between lochs rather than staying in one place, this is a perfect stop. It breaks up a longer drive without turning into an activity you have to plan around.
It works particularly well if you:
- Have been driving for a while
- Want some fresh air without a walk
- Are travelling with kids who don’t want another long stop
- Just want to enjoy the scenery without committing extra time
Five or ten minutes here is often all you need.
A small pop-culture nod (and nothing more)
Some people recognise the name Rest and Be Thankful because it’s often mentioned in connection with Barry from EastEnders. The storyline was filmed in this part of Scotland, and over time the pass has become loosely associated with it; sometimes prompting visitors to look out for a small, unofficial plaque.
Whether or not this exact viewpoint featured on screen isn’t really the point. It’s more a bit of trivia that tends to come up when the name is mentioned. Once you’re standing there, the scenery quickly takes over.
Practical things worth knowing
- Parking: Free car park right at the viewpoint
- Time needed: 5–15 minutes
- Access: Flat, easy access from the car park
- Facilities: No toilets at the viewpoint
- Nearest public toilets are further down the glen near the Ardgartan trails
One of those stops you’re glad you made
This isn’t a headline attraction or somewhere you need to build a day around. It’s just one of Scotland’s classic views; a quiet pause on the road that adds something to the journey.
If you’re travelling between Loch Lomond, Loch Long, and Loch Fyne, and passing through Arrochar, the Rest and Be Thankful is well worth stopping for. Sometimes the in-between places are the ones you remember most.
