When you want to get out with the kids but don’t want to spend £50 before lunchtime, these North West days out are free or cost next to nothing and are actually enjoyable for adults too.
The Beach (Free, Always a Win)
You really can’t beat the beach. Buckets, sticks, endless running space and zero pressure to “do” anything.
Great North West options:
- Formby
- Crosby
- St Anne’s
- Morecambe (classic and flat for little legs)
Cost: Free (parking varies)
Tip: Winter beach trips mean fewer crowds; and kids genuinely don’t care about the weather.
Pendle Sculpture Trail
A woodland walk with giant sculptures hidden along the route keeps kids moving without complaints.
- Flat paths
- Circular route options
- Feels like an “adventure” without being hard work
Cost: Free
Tip: Wellies beat trainers most of the year.

Witton Country Park
One of the best free parks in Lancashire:
- Massive open space
- Woodland walks
- Play areas
- Café if bribery is required
Cost: Free entry and parking
Why it works: You can stay 30 minutes or 3 hours — no commitment.
Worden Park
Best for: Toddlers through to early teens
Worden Park is one of those places that just works for families. Multiple play areas, loads of open space, and proper paths for scooters and bikes mean kids can burn off energy without constant direction.
There’s a café if you need it, plus a mini railway on open days. It costs a few pounds but feels like a big win for younger kids.
Cost: Free entry
Extras: Mini railway and café (optional)
Why it’s good: Easy, flexible and perfect for a low-pressure day out.
Heaton Park
Heaton Park is a great free day out with loads of space to run, multiple play areas and easy walking paths.
There is an animal centre with farm animals (cows, pigs, goats, sheep), but it’s not a hands-on petting farm. Kids can see the animals up close, which is usually more than enough, especially for younger ones.
Cost: Free entry
Extras: Small charges for parking, boating lake, tram ride or cafés
Why it works: You can keep it completely free or add paid bits if you want.

Manchester Museum
Manchester Museum is one of the best completely free days out with kids in the North West. You can easily spend a couple of hours here without feeling rushed.
Highlights for families include:
- Dinosaurs and fossils
- Ancient Egypt (mummies always impress)
- Living Worlds and nature exhibits
- Plenty of space to wander without it feeling overwhelming
Cost: Free entry
Good to know: Booking is sometimes required during busy periods, but tickets are still free.
Why it works: Indoors, educational without feeling like “learning”, and perfect for rainy days.
