Things to Do This February Mid Term in North East Scotland

February mid term for Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire schools starts on Monday 9 February 2026, with in service days on Tuesday 10 and Wednesday 11 February. We know some schools may also have cluster days, including Friday 6 February, which can make the break feel even longer.

February mid term can feel difficult to plan, especially with winter weather, but there are loads of great options across the North East to suit different ages and budgets. Whether you’re after something indoors, outdoors, free or just easy, hopefully this list gives you a few ideas to help plan the week.

Crathes Castle – Kids’ Castle Tour and Crafts

Crathes Castle are running a children’s castle tour during February mid term, followed by a craft activity. The experience includes a short guided tour of the castle, lasting around 30 to 40 minutes, with a hands-on arts and crafts session afterwards.

This event is aimed at children aged around 4 to 11 years and is a nice option if you’re looking for something a bit different from the usual outdoor visit.

Child tickets cost £5, with free entry for accompanying adults. Only one adult can go inside the castle with each child.

Due to the historic layout of the castle, this event isn’t suitable for buggies or wheelchairs, as it involves stairs, including a spiral staircase. The café will be open on the day, although with a limited menu.

Full details and booking information can be found here: Crathes Castle

Museums

Aberdeen Science Centre

This is a great option if your kids like things they can actually touch and try. It’s very hands-on, with plenty of interactive exhibits that keep children engaged rather than just looking at displays. It works especially well for primary-age children and is ideal for a shorter visit during half term. They often run extra sessions or activities in school holidays, so it’s worth checking what’s on before you go.

Admission prices
Ticket prices vary depending on age and ticket type. At the time of writing:

Adults £13.75
Children aged 3 to 17 £9.07
Children under 3 free
Concessions and students £11.55

There are also reduced price tickets available for families in receipt of Universal Credit, with adult tickets at £6.05 and child tickets at £3.85, which makes this a much more affordable option for many families.

Aberdeen Maritime Museum

Right in the city centre and easy to combine with a walk or lunch nearby. There’s lots to look at, including ships, the harbour and hands-on displays that tend to keep children interested. It’s free to visit, which is always a bonus for a budget-friendly day out.

Gordon Highlanders Museum

This one works well for slightly older children. The museum is well laid out and the gardens are lovely if the weather is dry. They often run family-friendly activities during school holidays, so it’s worth checking what’s on.

Admission prices
Adult £15.50
Child £7.00
Concession £14.50
Family ticket £32.00

Open Tuesday to Saturday from 10.00 to 16.30 and closed on Sundays and Mondays. Full details and tickets can be found here: Gordon Highlanders Museum

Peterhead Prison Museum

A bit different, but older children often find this really interesting. You can choose between a self guided tour, where you explore at your own pace using an audio guide and map, or a guided tour led by an expert who brings the prison’s history to life.

The self guided tour lets you wander around the prison grounds, explore the cells and learn about life behind bars in your own time. There’s also a café overlooking the harbour, which is a nice spot to stop afterwards.

The guided tour is more in depth and lasts around 90 minutes. It’s best suited to older children and adults and includes stories about the prison’s past, including its role in some major moments in history.

Self guided tour prices
Adults from £15
Children aged 5 to 15 from £10
Children under 5 free
Family tickets available

Guided tour prices
Adults from £25
Children from £17

Soft Play and Farm Parks

Soft play centres and farm parks are always popular during February half term, especially when the weather isn’t great. They’re ideal for burning off energy and are usually easy to plan around naps, meals and tired legs.

Codona’s

Codona’s is always a favourite for us. Smugglers Cove is great for older children, while the baby area is brilliant for little ones. Our youngest absolutely loves the baby section, and it’s so handy being able to keep an eye on them while you sit and eat. The food is a big win too — Big Manny’s pizzas are genuinely hard to beat, which makes this an easy choice for a relaxed half-day outing.

You can either choose from a range of different packages or simply pay on the day for individual activities such as the play areas, depending on what suits your plans.

Full details, prices and booking options can be found here: Codonas

Wynford Farm Park

Wynford Farm Park works really well if you want a mix of animals and outdoor play. Our eldest especially loves the sand area and could happily spend ages there. It’s a great option if the weather is reasonable and you want something that feels a bit more open than soft play.

Admission prices
Adults aged 16 and over £9.95
Children aged 2 to 15 £10.95
Under 2s aged 6 to 23 months £7.95

It’s worth booking tickets online in advance, as this is usually cheaper than paying on the day.

Full details and online booking can be found here: Wynford Farm

Den & The Glen

Dan & The Glen is a lovely spot and one we visit often. In the summer, it’s brilliant for a full day out — the characters, outdoor space and picnic areas mean you can easily spend hours there. In winter and during half term, the soft play den is probably the highlight and works really well when it’s cold or wet outside.

Admission Prices
Entry is priced by age and by area.

For The Den, children under 6 months go free, children aged 6 to 11 months are £2, and children aged 1 to 14 years are £5.95. Adults and OAPs go free.

For The Glen, children under 6 months are free, children aged 6 to 11 months are £2, and children aged 1 to 14 years are £5.95. Adults and OAPs are £5.95.

There’s also a handy offer where paying to go into The Glen gives free entry to The Den, subject to availability, which can be great if you’re visiting with children of different ages.

Full details, opening times and the most up to date prices can be found here: Den & The Glen

Playtown

Playtown is another good option in Inverurie, especially for younger children age up to 7 years old. It’s easy to manage, doesn’t feel too overwhelming, and works well for a shorter visit when you just need to get out of the house for a bit.

Prices and booking
Each child ticket includes entry for one adult, so one child equals one adult, two children equals two adults and so on. You only need to book additional adults if more adults are attending.

Child with one adult £6.50
Additional adults £1.50
Children under 1 go free

Full details and booking can be found here:
Playtown Inverurie

AirHop

If you’ve got older children who need to seriously burn off energy, AirHop is a great option in Aberdeen. It’s much better suited to school-age kids than toddlers, with lots of space to jump, climb and bounce without it feeling babyish.

It’s especially good during half term when kids are climbing the walls at home. Sessions are structured, so it’s worth booking ahead, but it does mean you know exactly how long you’ll be there, which can make planning the rest of the day easier. A solid choice if you’re looking for something active and indoors for older kids.

Playgrounds and Outdoor Spaces

Even in February, a playground visit can be a great way to break up the day, especially if you catch a dry spell. These work well as short outings or alongside a walk, café stop or beach visit.

Haughton Park

Haughton Park is one we go back to time and time again. There’s so much for kids to do, so it works well for different ages and energy levels. The pump track is a great addition and always a hit, especially with slightly older children who want something a bit more active.

In the summer months there’s usually a small train running, which the kids love, although it doesn’t tend to operate in winter so it’s worth checking ahead if that’s something you’re hoping to catch. There’s plenty of parking, which makes it an easy option when you just want to get out without too much planning. A really solid choice for a family outing.

Queen Elizabeth Park

Queen Elizabeth Park in Stonehaven is a brilliant option and easy to combine with other plans. The playground is great for a range of ages, and you can walk straight down to the beach or into town afterwards. It’s one we often build a full day around if the weather behaves!

Hazlehead Park

Hazlehead is a solid all rounder in Aberdeen and easily one of our boys’ favourite places to go. It is huge and there is so much space that it can actually be quite hard keeping an eye on two children at once, but that is also what makes it such a brilliant day out.

The playground is large and well laid out and there is plenty of space for walking too. You have the maze, the petting zoo and lots of open areas to explore. There are also lovely little extras like the wood carved statues hidden around the park, which turn a simple walk into a bit of an adventure!

In the summer the rose garden is beautiful and you could very easily spend a whole day here without getting bored. There is plenty of parking which makes it an easy option when you want fresh air without travelling too far. We really love it here and would highly recommend it for families.

Haddo House and Country Park

Haddo is one of those places that works really well for a relaxed family day out. There’s a café on site, and the duck pond is always a hit with children — you can even buy oats from the café to feed them, which is handy. There are a couple of play areas to explore, a fairy garden that younger children especially love, and plenty of spots if you want to take a picnic.

There are also lovely walking paths around the park, so it’s easy to spend a few hours here without feeling rushed. It’s a great option if you’re looking for somewhere that offers a bit of everything in one place.

Riverside Park

Riverside Park is a great stop if you’re visiting Huntly. The playground is right next to the river, with lots of open space around it, so kids don’t feel boxed in. It’s ideal for letting them run about, and there are paths nearby for walking or scootering. This one works really well paired with a visit to Huntly Castle or a wander into town afterwards.

The Meadows Play Area

The Meadows is another popular playground in Huntly and a favourite with local families. It’s a good size, suits a range of ages, and feels relaxed rather than overly busy. Easy to dip in and out of, and a nice option if you’re looking to break up the day without too much planning.

One of the best things about these two playgrounds is how close they are to each other. Riverside Park and The Meadows are only a short walk apart, which means you can easily visit both in one trip and get the best of both worlds. It makes Huntly a really easy place to spend a few hours with our boys.

Winter note
February outings often mean muddy paths and wet ground, especially in parks and woodland areas. Wellies and spare clothes are always a good idea, and some paths may be slippery after rain. A lot of these places are still great in winter, just with a bit of extra planning.
